Music written by Latin American composers or inspired by Latin America — and, at its heart, the repertoire for classical guitar and orchestra, which UNIDOS wants to grow by commissioning new works. Its concerts pair the orchestra with mariachi, a son jarocho ensemble and folklórico dancers, so that a Brouwer concerto and a huapango can live in the same evening.

Classical guitar meets orchestra and the traditions of Latin America — on stage in Boston since 2023.
Orchestra UNIDOS is ALMA Boston's resident orchestra, founded in November 2023 by Zaira Meneses to elevate the classical guitar repertoire and present new arrangements that blend orchestral music with the traditional sounds of Latin America. It performs in Boston with mariachi, son jarocho musicians and folk dancers sharing the same stage.

Zaira Meneses founded the orchestra as part of ALMA's mission to foster a deeper appreciation of Latin American classical music in Boston. Jorge Soto is the resident conductor and Josefina Guzmán the program advisor. The musicians are professionals, students and community players who audition each season.
Auditions are open to string, wind and percussion players of all backgrounds. Prepare two contrasting pieces of your choice and a short excerpt we will send you, and tell us your instrument, your experience and your availability. Rehearsals take place in Newton and Cambridge. Do I get paid?
UNIDOS is a community orchestra; core professional positions may receive a stipend depending on the concert's funding. We tell you before you commit.
I play guitar. Is there a place for me?
Yes — the guitar is the orchestra's reason to exist. Guitar soloists and ensemble players are welcome; see also La Guitarra Fest.
ALMA's programs are free or low-cost because people like you fund scholarships, instruments and rehearsal space.
